All buildings, visitor spaces and reading rooms of the Library of Congress will be closed for the federal Thanksgiving holiday, Thursday, Nov. 23. Normal operations will resume on Friday, Nov. 24.

Cloakroom Service: October 2023-February 2024

Individuals visiting the Library of Congress should note a seasonal service change for the Jefferson East Cloakroom (located at the Southeast Entrance).

October 2023-February 2024: The Jefferson East Cloakroom (located at the Southeast Entrance) does not operate in the months of October, November, December, January and February. We apologize for the inconvenience.

The Library’s other two cloak rooms remain operational:

Madison Building: Madison Cloakroom (LM140)

Jefferson Building: Jefferson West Cloakroom (located at the West Entrance)

Hours of Operation: Jefferson Building Access May 9-10

Jefferson Building Access May 9-10

On Wednesday, May 10, a special event in the Great Hall will reduce access in the Jefferson Building. All exhibitions, public spaces and the Library Shop in the Thomas Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress will be closed for the entire day, and no timed-entry passes will be offered to the public.

Researchers may access the Jefferson Building reading rooms as they will be open normal hours of service with regular access. Entry is via the Independence Avenue door to the Madison Building and then via tunnel to the Jefferson Building. The West Basement (Carriage) doors and the Capitol Visitor Center tunnel to the Library will be closed to staff, researchers and the general public.

Also, on Tuesday, May 9, the same spaces in the Library’s Jefferson Building will close early to visitors at 3 p.m. There is no impact to researchers using the reading rooms in the Jefferson Building.

All building exits will be available for use in the event of an emergency. Normal access to the Great Hall, Main Reading Room, exhibitions and all other affected areas of the Jefferson building will resume at regular hours on Thursday, May 11.

Hours of Operation: Main Reading Room Open for Presidents Day

Main Reading Room Open for Presidents Day

The Library will be open to visitors with timed-entry passes on Presidents Day, Monday, February 20, 2023, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Similarly, the Main Reading Room will be open for visitors to view from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. via the Great Hall West Entry Doors. All other reading rooms are closed in observance of the federal holiday, and there will be no research availability or reader registration on this date.

On Thursday, Jan. 26, the Thomas Jefferson Building will close to the public at 3 p.m. to prepare for a special event. This will affect the Great Hall, all exhibitions and the Library Shop.

Researchers may access Jefferson Building reading rooms until 5 p.m. The Main Reading Room, usually open until 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, will close early, at 6 p.m. The West Basement (Carriage) entrance will remain open to staff and researchers only. The following is the holiday operation schedule, including building closures, for the Library of Congress for December 2022 and early January 2023:

Saturday, Dec. 24 (Christmas Eve)
The Thomas Jefferson Building will be open to visitors with timed-entry passes from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.  The Madison and Adams buildings and all Library of Congress reading rooms will be CLOSED.

Sunday, Dec. 25 (Christmas Day)
All Library buildings CLOSED.

Monday, Dec. 26 (Christmas Day observed)
All Library buildings and services, including reading rooms and exhibitions, will be CLOSED to the public.

Saturday, Dec. 31 (New Year’s Eve)
The Thomas Jefferson Building will be open to visitors with timed-entry passes from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.  The Madison and Adams buildings and all Library of Congress reading rooms will be CLOSED.

Sunday, Jan. 1 (New Year’s Day)
All Library buildings CLOSED.

Monday, Jan. 2, 2023 (New Year’s Day observed)
All Library buildings and services, including reading rooms and exhibitions, will be CLOSED to the public.

Monday, Jan. 18, 2023 (Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday)
The Thomas Jefferson Building will be open to visitors with timed-entry passes from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.  The Madison and Adams buildings and all Library of Congress reading rooms will be CLOSED.

The Library’s public spaces and reading rooms will operate as usual during its regular hours on Friday, December 23, as well as Tuesday, December 27 through Friday, December 30. Normal hours of operation will resume on Tuesday, January 2, 2023.
